Junior High and High School

Winter Retreat at Camp Utaba Friday, February 28 - Sunday, March 2, 2014
NO CLASS THIS SUNDAY

The following is the basic information for registered students. 

1- Meet at Good Shepherd at 5:30 pm on Friday.  Bring sleeping bag, pillow, toiletries, towel, snow clothes, sled (optional), BIBLE, pen & paper, comfortable warm clothes, slippers for main room.

2- No cell phones are allowed, please encourage your student to bring a paper Bible.  We would like there to be no distractions while at camp if possible.  Having students go "unplugged" for the weekend can be very challenging for them but it is a very good experience for us all.  In the case of an emergency you can reach me at 801-910-1531 or you can contact the camp directly and they will put you in touch with us.  All of their contact information can be found at http://www.camputaba.org.

3- We will stop for dinner on the way to camp (fast food stop).  Please have your student bring $ for this stop.  Also, if you have a balance due for the camp registration please bring that with you on Friday when you drop your son/daughter off at Good Shepherd.

4- We will return at approximately 1:30 pm on Sunday.

Sunday, March 9, 2014 is "Family Worship Sunday" so there is no class for Junior High and High School students.

Use the sermon note to talk together about Sunday's message.

What if I Pray Really Hard and God Says No?
Key Faith Foundation:  Accepting God's Answers
Key Scriptures to read together as a family:  2 Samuel 12:15-23; Proverbs 15:29; Mark 14:32-36; 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

Talk about it:

• Discover at least two people in the Bible to whom God said "no."  (David, when he asked God to spare his son in 2 Samuel 12; Moses, when he asked God to find someone else in Exodus 4)
• Describe a time from the Bible when God answered prayer differently than expected.  (Gideon and his small army in Judges 6-7; the Savior being born as a baby in a manger in Luke 2).
• Find one thing that each person in your family has asked for but never received.
• Discover someone in your family whose prayer God answered with "no".

Third Grade
The Passover
Bible lesson to read together:  Exodus 12:1-12, 21-30
Lesson Theme:  Blood has been shed on our behalf

Talk about it:

• What is Passover?
• When was the first Passover?
• What does "blood has been shed on our behalf" mean?  (Just as the lamb's blood caused God to pass over the Israelites, Christ's blood, shed for us on the cross, saves believers today.)
• Read 1 John 1:7.  What is God saying to us through this verse?

Second Grade
Old Testament Review:  Your child will review the stories of Genesis and discover God's great rescue plan.  They will learn a Genesis summary with hand motions and symbols and create a Genesis story book.  Please review the story book with them after Sunday.

Talk about it: 

Look for the "Go Home Card" this Sunday for a copy of the Genesis Summary including hand motions.

First Grade
This week your child will review the first 8 books of the Bible:  Genesis-Ruth, and hear stories about King Saul from 1 Samuel.

Talk about it:

• Can you name the first 8 Books of the Bible?  (Genesis, Exoduls, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges and Ruth.)
• Why was Samuel called a Prophet?  (Because he delivered messages from God the the Israelites.)
• Would you have liked to be the first king of Israel?  Why or why not?
• What is the name of the first King of Israel?  (King Saul)

The Road to Damascus
Bible Story to read together:  Acts 9
After reading the story;

Say: Our Bible says Paul was mean to the Christians and didn't love Jesus and then God changed him.  What happened?
Ask: How do you think God can change us?
Say:  God loves us and his Son, Jesus died for us.  That is why we try to be good.  Jesus can help us obey and love Him more all the time, just like Paul.
Pray:  Dear Jesus, thank You for loving us and making us more like you every day.  We love you too!  Amen.

High School
This Sunday we will conclude our conversation about whether or not belief in God is rational given the world around us. We will continue to seek to answer the questions about what it means to have a worldview.

Talk About It

1. How prepared are we to speak with friends and neighbors who come from different religions or no religion at all?
2. Why is it important to have a knowledge of other ideas that might be different than mine?
3. Is Christianity really about us being right and them being wrong?  How does jesus (his life, teachings and mission) really answer our life's deepest longings?
